Background of the Study
Vaccine hesitancy, defined as the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines, is a growing public health concern. It threatens the success of immunization programs and increases the risk of preventable disease outbreaks. Katsina State has faced challenges in achieving optimal immunization coverage due to misinformation, cultural beliefs, and distrust in the healthcare system (WHO, 2024). Understanding the extent of vaccine hesitancy and its impact on immunization coverage is crucial for designing effective intervention strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of vaccines, immunization coverage in Katsina State remains below national targets. Misinformation, religious beliefs, and concerns about vaccine safety contribute to vaccine hesitancy, leading to suboptimal coverage. There is a need to assess the factors driving vaccine hesitancy and their impact on immunization rates in Katsina State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the level of vaccine hesitancy among parents in Katsina State.
2. To assess the impact of vaccine hesitancy on immunization coverage.
3. To identify the key drivers of vaccine hesitancy in the region.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy in Katsina State?
2. How does vaccine hesitancy affect childhood immunization coverage?
3. What factors contribute to vaccine hesitancy among parents?
Research Hypotheses
1. Vaccine hesitancy is negatively correlated with childhood immunization coverage.
2. Misinformation and cultural beliefs significantly contribute to vaccine hesitancy.
3. Public health education programs can reduce vaccine hesitancy and improve immunization rates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on parents of children under five in Katsina State. Limitations may include social desirability bias in responses and difficulties accessing hard-to-reach communities.
Definitions of Terms
• Vaccine Hesitancy: Reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite vaccine availability.
• Immunization Coverage: The proportion of children who receive recommended vaccines.
